That slight moment of panic because you realise it's nearly 2020 and you still don't have your shit together.
I've dug deep the last 24 hours or potentially I was distracting myself from monitoring 'Flight tracker' nonstop (my eldest son was flying back to the US where he attends college), either way there has been progress towards 2020.
And lastly some motivational quotes (work in progress) to place around my desk. Corny? Yes but surprisingly useful not only for me but for the kids as well as they usually use my desk more than me. My desk is more of a resting area for all my notebooks, work happens elsewhere, and thinking about that explains a lot.
The last 24 hours have been productive, I'm less stressed, I have a few plans in place for the start of 2020 and most importantly my eldest son arrived back to college safe and sound.
I hope 2020 is prosperous, healthy, peaceful, and enjoyable for everyone.
My love hate relationship with the screen industry
Why do I have a love hate relationship with the screen industry? Is it just me? Over the last few years it is a question I often ask myself and to be honest I don't have an answer.
I’ve been in the screen industry since July 2013 and that time has been spent studying and working. Work has varied from contract, casual, part time, full time work, or no work at all, and I’m also a single parent of four children.
I haven’t been able to find my path to the top of the screen industry. I can't see through the fog and I’m really struggling to find a job that matches my passion and skill level. In those moments you start to doubt yourself and your abilities, you start questioning your choices but I've realised I am not alone.
I thought, if I understand the current landscape, the people in it and the people consuming it, their needs as well as mine, I’d be able to come up with a plan that would help myself and other women like me.

But 74.1% of Motion picture, video, television, sound, or music production businesses are owned by men.
I could go on with all the facts and figures I've gathered over the last two years, showing the differences and the difficulties but I want this to be as solution based as possible. Ultimately what I've found is a huge disconnect between screen bodies and guilds, screen sections and platforms, and screen practitioners as well as how they all interact with funding bodies and the processes to get anything to audiences. Before I move on let me be clear about one thing, it is not equal for everyone working in the screen industry, it is anything but equal, which we all know, and the barriers can't be hidden by a few improvements.

Over the course of this blog I'll be looking at how 'Change starts with Behaviour' and how we need to develop new ways of thinking in order to design better solutions, services and experiences that solve our current problems.
Design Thinking will be used to explore the problems. Designing for social change is complex but not impossible.
Let's understand people while seeing the bigger picture, and discover the multitude of possibilities that can impact our industry for the better.
